Expansion of Dual Citizenship Rights in Bangladesh
In a significant move to embrace its global diaspora, the Government of Bangladesh has progressively expanded the list of countries whose citizens are permitted to hold dual nationality. Originally restricted to a handful of Western nations, the list now encompasses 101 countries across the globe. This allows Bangladeshis who acquire foreign citizenship in these nations to retain their Bangladeshi roots legally.
The Legal Framework
Under Article 2B(2) of the Bangladesh Citizenship (Temporary Provisions) Order, 1972, acquiring foreign citizenship automatically results in the loss of Bangladeshi citizenship. However, the government retains the power to grant exemptions via State Regulatory Orders (SROs). Through SROs issued in 2008, 2012, and a major cabinet approval in 2023, the list of exempted countries was vastly expanded.
The Approved Countries List
If you acquire citizenship in any of the following regions/countries, you are eligible to apply for a Dual Nationality Certificate (DNC):
North America & Europe
- North America: United States of America (USA) and Canada.
- Europe: United Kingdom (UK) and all other European nations (including Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, etc.).
Asia & Oceania
- Asia: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, South Korea, and Japan.
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.
Caribbean & South America
The 2023 expansion heavily featured nations popular for Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programs:
- Caribbean: Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
- South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Africa
The list also includes 19 African nations, such as Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Ghana, and Mauritius.
What If Your Country Is Not on the List?
If you acquire citizenship in a country not included in the 101 approved nations (for example, many Middle Eastern or SAARC countries), you cannot legally hold dual citizenship. In such cases, you must formally renounce your Bangladeshi citizenship.
